Real Talk is a monthly education series designed to support families caring for loved ones with dementia. Led by Kate Race, a former memory care director with over 25 years of dementia experience, these sessions offer honest conversations, helpful strategies, and emotional support to guide families through the challenges of caregiving.

Whether you’re just beginning your caregiving journey or navigating the later stages of dementia, Real Talk provides the knowledge and tools you need to feel more confident, connected, and prepared. Join us on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM. See future session dates and topics below.

    January (1/16) – Communication Techniques & Anticipating Needs – Knowing what someone who is living with dementia needs, especially when they cannot tell you, is vital to successful caregiving. Join us to learn how you can anticipate the needs of those who live with dementia.

    February (2/20) – Taking in Data & Sensory Changes – Understanding how we take in data and how that is affected when you are living with dementia is vital to providing good care. Join us to learn about sensory changes and how to best work within those changes.

    March (3/20) – Enhancing Visits & Interactions – Positive and appropriate communication with those living with dementia is very important to maintaining successful interactions. Join us to learn how you can enhance your visits and interactions.

    April (4/17) – Support Systems & Building Your Team – When it comes to caring for someone with dementia there are many important factors to consider. Join us to learn how to gain support and how
    to build a team for this journey.

    May (5/15) – Resistance & Refusals – People living with dementia often refuse much-needed care tasks. Please join us to learn techniques of how you can overcome resistance.

    June (6/19) – Care Giving & Care Receiving – Caring for someone living with dementia can be overwhelming and exhausting. Join us to learn how you can best care for yourself as you provide care for others.

    July (7/17) – Dementia Truths and Overview – Dementia can be a complex journey and because it looks different for each person it affects, trying to decide what is applicable for your situation can be overwhelming. Let us help you decipher the truths about the disease.

    August (8/21) – Setting Up for Success – There are so many elements that go into successfully working with someone who has a brain disease. Join us to learn applicable techniques to help you achieve success.

    September (9/18) – Overcoming Obstacles & Navigating the Unexpected – Knowing how to overcome some of the most common obstacles when it comes to caring for someone living with dementia is vital in successful caregiving. Join us to learn how to overcome these obstacles.

    October (10/16) – Progression & What’s Next – Dementia is a journey, with many steps along the way. Join us to learn how you can prepare for this journey.

    November (11/20) – Dementia Detection & Normal Aging – Often dementia can be mistaken for normal aging and vice versa. Join us to learn the differences between the two.

    December (12/18) – Acceptance & Adaptation – Accepting their reality and meeting someone living with dementia in their reality is crucial. Join us to learn how you can join the journey and adapt to the situation, even in altered realities.

    Meet Kate Race

    Kate has over 25 years of experience in care for seniors and their families. Her grandfathers were her inspiration – when she was 17, she moved in with one of her grandfathers with dementia to be his caregiver.

    Dementia care and education are a personal passion, and she spent 14 years at Atria Summit Hills Senior Living as their Memory Care Director, where she managed a staff of 25.

    Her passion is not confined to the workplace – about a decade ago, she began volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association. She currently enjoys running three of their support groups. She is also heavily involved with Giving Voice, a nonprofit dedicated to providing programming for those with memory loss and their families. A PAC certified dementia trainer, Kate has used her personal and professional experience to help thousands of families.

    This FREE educational program is for our families and other caregiving partners. It’s as interactive as you want it to be: Dial in and just listen, or bring your questions and actively participate.

    Third Thursday of Every Month @ 6:30 pm

    These sessions include roundtable discussion so you can share your questions. Kate is a Certified Dementia Trainer in Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care program and has more than two decades of hands-on experience.
